Approximating the jump discontinuities of a function by its Fourier-Jacobi coefficients

چکیده
In the present paper we generalize Eckhoff’s method, i.e., the method for approximating the locations of discontinuities and the associated jumps of a piecewise smooth function by means of its Fourier-Chebyshev coefficients. A new method enables us to approximate the locations of discontinuities and the associated jumps of a discontinuous function, which belongs to a restricted class of the piecewise smooth functions, by means of its Fourier-Jacobi coefficients for arbitrary indices. Approximations to the locations of discontinuities and the associated jumps are found as solutions of algebraic equations. It is shown as well that the locations of discontinuities and the associated jumps are recovered exactly for piecewise constant functions with a finite number of discontinuities. In addition, we study the accuracy of the approximations and present some numerical examples.

Approximation of the discontinuities of a function by its classical orthogonal polynomial Fourier coefficients
In the present paper, we generalize the method suggested in an earlier paper by the author and overcome its main deficiency. First, we modify the well-known Prony method, which subsequently will be utilized for recovering exactly the locations of jump discontinuities and the associated jumps of a piecewise constant function by means of its Fourier coefficients with respect to any system of the ...
متن کاملDetermination of a jump by Fourier and Fourier-Chebyshev series
By observing the equivalence of assertions on determining the jump of a function by its differentiated or integrated Fourier series, we generalize a previous result of Kvernadze, Hagstrom and Shapiro to the whole class of functions of harmonic bounded variation. This is achieved without the finiteness assumption on the number of discontinuities. Two results on determination of ...
متن کاملApproximation of the Singularities of a Bounded Function by the Partial Sums of Its Differentiated Fourier Series
The problem of locating the discontinuities of a function by means of its truncated Fourier series, an interesting question in and of itself, arises naturally from an attempt to overcome the Gibbs phenomenon: the poor approximative properties of the Fourier partial sums of a discontinuous function. In [3], Cai et al. developed the idea already introduced in their previous papers and suggested a...
متن کاملIterative Design of Concentration Factors for Jump Detection
The concentration method of edge detection was developed to compute the locations and values of jump discontinuities in a piecewise-analytic function from its first few Fourier series coefficients. The accuracy and characteristic features of the resulting jump approximation depend on Fourier space “filter” factors known as concentration factors. In this paper, we provide a flexible, iterative f...
متن کاملEdge Detection Using Fourier Coefficients
1. INTRODUCTION. Edge detection and the detection of discontinuities are important in many fields. In image processing, for example, one often needs to determine the boundaries of the items of which a picture is composed. (For more information about edge detection in image processing, see [10].) We consider the problem of detecting the edges present in a function when given the Fourier coeffici...
